25 thumbnails

spent 2 min per thumbnail, I want to focus on the chairs of the couple either using a love seat or two chairs side by side to represent their love.

  1. Isabel, these thumbnails read very clearly and show a great variety! Kudos!

Keep in mind that in the story, Della and Jim have very limited financial means. Their apartment is likely a one-room apartment (maybe it includes a closet or a water closet, but not much more besides that one extra amenity). Why is this important? They would eat, sleep, live in that one room, whereas many of the thumbnails you present have more the appearance of a living room than a one-room-for-everything. It's likely there is a bed (large enough for two people, but probably of modest size). More so than a low living room table, you'd have a table where Della and Jim eat, and with second hand chairs. So, as you rework your next batch of thumbnails, think more of this.

As for the thumbnails that show the most promise (my personal top ones!), in no particular order: #6, #15, #24, #22. Many of those manage to include a lot of visual information in the illustration (unlike say, #1). Moreover, they all have some kind of interesting depth (foreground, middle ground, and background). They are not imposing (like #14 or #25) and thus the ones I selected have more potential to suggest the cozy apartment shared by the two young lovers.

As for the chairs side-by-side, when one has little money, one can be a chooser! So maybe they have two chairs that were given to them, instead of a nice couch. However, metaphorically, two separate chairs also suggest separation. So, if you find a nice way to bring those chairs together to express that they love to sit in those next to each other, it would work better (with no or little gap between them). Else, consider a sofa instead (or the bed filling both functions: bed and sofa).

One last thought: if you manage to include a view of the exterior (with some kind of window), you can also contrast the warmth on the inside and the cold on the outside as well as the festive decorations in and out of the apartment for the Christmas season.

    I hope this helps!
